We have had a busy week preparing for our first student led conferences, reading, writing, arithmetic and more!! Tomorrow is sure to be a fun filled event,  the schedule is below.

Science: We have been busy continuing learning all about the weather, and focusing on the barometric pressure, humidity, and wind speed!

Writing: The students are looking at their research with the lens of a historian,  focusing on the geography of their tribe, putting in their own thoughts about their research, and being aware of other events that were taking place around the world as their Native American tribe flourished.

Reading: We are looking at nonfiction text and how they increase with complexity. We are learning new strategies to help us understand tricky words.

Math: We are dividing greater numbers. The test will be next Thursday, November 5th. A study guide will be coming home tomorrow.

Social Studies: They are wrapping up their google slide presentations on their tribe. I am looking forward tomorrow, as they will present their dwelling project as well as their Google slide presentation.

What's happening this week?

Here is what is happening this week in room 34.....

Science: We are learning about the different instruments scientists used to collect data about the weather. We are also focusing on what causes the weather.

Writing: We are beginning our new unit on informational writing. Our first research topic will be on Native Americans. Each student will use the same tribe they have chosen for their social studies project to write an informational piece. We will be working on taking notes, organizing the notes, and then drafting their paper.

Social Studies: We will give class time for them to work on their Google slide presentation.
Their Native American dwelling project and slide presentation is due October 29th. Parents, if their project is complete you can bring it at our conference time.

Reading: We are beginning a new unit on reading nonfiction and tackling increasingly complex texts with a focus on determining main ideas. Each student is encouraged to keep reading their choice book, but also to try a nonfiction text, article, magazine, or book too:)

Math: We are interpreting the remainder and determining extra or missing information within problem solving, estimating and dividing by 2-digit divisors.

Math Homework 10.7

What is happening this week in room 34?

Image result for growth mindset quotes for teachers

Happy Tuesday, sorry a little late with this week's happenings:) The above quote is a perfect growth mindset view towards the last week we had with assessments. I am so proud of all the hard work each student put towards their social studies, math, and science tests. Tests went home yesterday and today. I want to emphasize that we are focusing on a growth mindset and working towards setting goals this year.  Your child's leader binder went home to show you how we are tracking our data in math. You will notice the pre-assessment was out of 18 points. The post- assessment has those same 18 points (first 4 problems of the test). The actual test score is out of 42 points.

*Reminder- Any grade 70-79, students have the CHOICE to fix it and return for partial credit. A grade of 69 or less MUST be signed, fixed, and returned.

Science: We are beginning our weather unit this week. We will begin tracking the weather and charting our daily findings using weather.com. We also began science stations based on the water cycle.

Writing this week we are editing, focusing on commas usage and publishing our second personal narrative via Google drive. We will celebrate by sharing on Friday!

Reading We are wrapping up on unit on interpreting  books clubs by analyzing  and comparing  characters' connections to a theme, study the choices an author did not make to better understand the ones they did, and delve deeper into literary analysis. We will celebrate on Friday with sharing their thoughts and recommendations on both of their book clubs books!

Math We will began our unit on division!  We will relate division to multiplication through fact families, divide with and without remainders, divide mentally using patterns with powers of 10, and estimate quotients. Their will be homework nightly via the Blog.

Social Studies Today we began Ch. 2 The First Americans. Today we learned how people first came to the American continents, theories behind Beringia, and one of the first important civilizations, the Mound Builders. Our centers included: My Capstone Library books about different ancient Americans and American Indian tribes, American Indian tribe comparison chart, and debating with me on the theories of how the first American evolved in America. We are using the website mycapstonelibrary.com. Students are choosing from the following books to read/listen to--
What did the Aztecs do for me?
Sitting Bull
American Indian Stories and Legends
Great Basin Indians
Pocahontas
Northwest Coast Indians
Southeast Indians
Northeast Indians
California Indians
Plateau Indians
