Hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Spring Break!

Here is what is happening this week...

Science: We are beginning to review science concepts to be ready for MAP testing. Part of fifth's grade Science MAP testing includes all concepts they have learned from Kindergarten. We will start reviewing these concepts during our science stations. This week will be going over the scientific method and apply it to a force investigation.

Writing: We will start drafting and writing our DARE essay. Click here DARE essay  to learn more about the expectations for this essay.

Math: We will be finding the volume of composite figures and problem solving. Today, they will get their study guide for our test. We will go over this tomorrow.  Our chapter 12 test will be on Thursday. Remember, each student should be working on ALEKS for 20 minutes each week at home. I could not be more proud of my class and their  determination and hard work they put towards their ALEKS's goals!!!

ReadingWe are continuing to analyze, discuss, and answer higher level questions relating to complex passages and texts as we prepare for the MAP test.

What is going on this week in room 34........

Science: We are are working on force and motion as well as the Earth's surfaces. We will have a test over chapter 11, Force and Motion next Wednesday, March 16th.

Writing: We are continuing  to strengthen our Researched-Based Argument Essay. This week we are working on adding rebuttals, responses and counterclaims to our paper. We are looking at the evidence and evaluating its worth and as well as writing to appeal to the appropriate audience.

Math: Today we will go over the study guide for chapter 11, measurement.  Tomorrow will be our test. Please have your child look over and make sure they understand the concepts in the study guide. They may also look at old homework on the blog and their math notebook. They must also now the Metric Song, and how to apply it.
The Metric Song

Milli, Centi, Deci, meter
Deka, hecto, kilo, too
Put them with a gram and liter
That is all you have to do

Milli is the smallest measure
Ten of these a centi makes
One hundred centis make a unit
That’s not very hard to take

Liters measure only liquid
Grams measure weight or mass
Meters measure length or distance
You can go to the head of the class

As your child to sing it and do the actions, they love it!!

Reading: This week we are beginning a test-preparation unit in reading. We will begin to discuss strategies that will help us with test-taking such as determining if a question is about the whole text or just a detail from the text, predicting answers before finding them, and being aware that test takers try to trick us by making all the answers SEEM correct! The BEST way to become better readers is by simply reading, thinking, and discussing- I love doing all these things with your 5th graders everyday!

Social Studies: We are working on wrapping up our unit on the 13 Colonies. Each student was partnered up to create a google slide presentation on their particular colony. They are getting very creative with their slides:)

This week...

Science- We are continuing to study forces and motion this week as we complete our complex machine projects and engage in a force investigation.

Writing- Our chocolate milk argument letters were due today and they did an amazing job!. We shared and participated in debates, stating our claims and backing them up with our reasons and evidence. We will start our 2nd argument essay as we take our arguments up a notch and bring a critical perspective to our writing. Students may choose to write about the argument topic they are researching in reading.

Math- We are continuing our study of converting units of measurement. We are converting customary units of capacity, displaying measurement data on a line plot, and converting metric units of length, mass, and capacity. Our chapter 11 test on measurement will be next Wed., March 9th.

Reading- We are working hard in reading as we mine texts within our research teams for relevant information to help strengthen our arguments. We will also reflect on and strengthen our team conversations, think and wonder as we continue reading and researching, and summarize to hold on to what is most essential.

Social Studies- We are continuing to work in stations and participate in small group discussions on the 13 colonies. Students will create Google slide presentations on their group's region (New England, Middle, or Southern colonies) and will teach the class next week!
