   This is so true with what are student's are working on this week. We are pushing them to be critical thinkers in all subject areas, and where they land is always better than where they began:)

This week in room 34.....

Science: We started our final lesson with chapter 11 force and motion. This week the students will be able to describe different kinds of machines and understand how they work.


Writing: We are working on finalizing our argument essay on chocolate milk and if it should be served in our school. They are working on adding powerful quotations, balancing evidence with analysis, and publishing their essay. We will share these out on Monday, the 29th.

Math: Our unit fraction test came home yesterday, students can make corrections to earn back points.  We started chapter 11 this week, which is measurement. This week will focus on converting customary units of length and weight. 

Reading: We are focusing on argument and advocacy, researching debatable issues. Every student chose a debatable issue and are researching both sides of the topic. We are focusing on looking at texts for relevant information and be able to think and wonder as they read. 

 Social Studies: We are engaging in small group discussions on how the thirteen colonies thrived and what daily life was like for them.

  • Six Flags reading forms are due TOMORROW! 
  • Middle School Forms due this Friday!
  • Friday- we met the million minute challenge so we will be having a day of celebrating reading!  Students are encouraged to dress as their favorite character from a book.
  • March 4- half day of school (no lunch will be served)

   Thank you so much for spoiling me last week. I could certainly feel the love and support through the kind cards, chocolate, coffee, balloons, and gift cards. You are all the best!!!
Thank you also for sending in the yummy treats for our "friendship" trail mix. The kids had a blast at our V- day celebration as well as Jump Rope for Heart, what a day!!

Here is what is happening this week....

Science: We are learning about all three of Newton's Law. Do not forget, if you did PRISM they are due today. The Concord Maker's Fair will be this Thursday, the 18th. They are still in need of 5th graders to volunteers, check out the link below.

Is your 5th grader looking for service hours? We need 5th grade volunteers to help out at Concord's Maker's Fair/Science Night on Feb. 18th from 3:15-4:15, 4:15-5:15, and 5:15-6:15. Check out the sign-up genius below to sign up for a time slot. 


Writing: We are beginning our next big unit of study, research-based argument essay. We will begin the unit with a focused topic to research. We will learn the importance of researching both sides of the topic and taking notes to develop a paper.


Math: We finished chapter 10 today, with problem solving using a diagram. Every student received a study guide today, for our test this Friday over chapters 8,9, and 10. We will review tomorrow and on Thursday. 

Reading:  In reading, we will also be studying arguments and advocacy! This week we will organize an ethical research life to investigate an issue within research teams.

Social Studies:  We are learning about the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies.

This Friday we will be celebrating Jump Rope for Heart from 11:00-12:00. We will then, celebrate Valentine's Day in our room by exchanging valentines, watching a movie, and eating our "friendship" trail mix.  If you would like to donate a small snack for the friendship trail mix, we would greatly appreciate it. As a reminder, we do have a tree nut allergy in the room and  we would appreciate labels visible somewhere for these students to check! 

We have 23 students in our class, if your child will be participating in passing out valentines.

Science:  We are beginning our unit on force and motion. Lesson one's objective is "What is Force?"

Writing:  We are publishing our second memoir!! We will celebrate our class's amazing  authors this Wednesday. 

Math:  We are busy working on multiplying and dividing fractions this week! Students are not just learning the steps, they are learning how to show visually with models in order to truly understand the algorithm. See the below video we watched in class to really understand fraction multiplication! Our unit test on chapters 8,9, and 10 will be next Friday, Feb. 19th. 


Reading: We are wrapping up our author study. We will be celebrating by writing blog posts that we admired and sharing our thoughts about our books. As well as making podcast about why their author is the best.

We will begin selling Candy-Grams tomorrow
The sale will last from Tuesday-Thursday during lunch.  
Candy-Grams will be .25 a piece and will include a little DumDum sucker.
Kids can buy them for anyone in the school and they will be delivered on Friday
Proceeds go toward our Concord Gardens.

Here is what is happening this week in room 34:

Science:  We will have a test on Chapter 9, Earth and Space. We reviewed today and will tomorrow as well.   To prepare and study at home, please use the following resources:

  • Science Book pages 363- 393
  • Ch. 9 Vocabulary Cards
  • Ch. 9 Study Guide pg. 401
  • Ch. 9 Review Test pages 402-404

Writing: We will be revising our memoirs by adding details that tell the audience more about themselves. We will be adding metaphors to convey our big ideas, and revising our sentences by varying the way we begin them and their length. Looking forward to publishing later this week, using Google Drive!!!

Math: We will review ch. 9 on adding and subtracting fractions on Monday and Tuesday with an informal quiz on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will start chapter 10 on multiplying and dividing fractions!

Reading: Our Author study book clubs are in full swing and we are comparing across multiple texts by one author. Book clubs will focus on comparing the setting, theme, character struggles, social issues, and text structures. 

Social Studies:  The Puritans have arrived, and we will be looking at their impact in the New England colonies.
